How to Get a Crystal-Clear Live Sonar Image: A Simple Fix for Interference

How to Get a Crystal-Clear Live Sonar Image: A Simple Fix for Interference

Live sonar has revolutionized how we fish, but nothing is more frustrating than a screen full of interference. You're trying to spot a fish in a brush pile, but a messy, pulsating signal is making it impossible. This is a common issue, and the solution is often a lot simpler than you think.

A popular misconception among anglers is that stopping their 2D sonar is enough to prevent interference on their live sonar display. But as our team's expert, Steve, demonstrates, this is often not the case. The live sonar at the front of your boat can still pick up signals from other transducers mounted at the back. The culprits are often your active DownScan and SideScan transducers, which continue to send out signals even when you're not viewing their pages.

The BassFishin Electronics Solution: A Step-by-Step Guide

To get a truly clean image, you need to completely stop the sonar signals from all other sources. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to doing just that:

  1. Stop Your 2D Sonar: If you have a 2D sonar screen running, the first step is to stop the sonar from that page.

  2. Stop Your SideScan: Navigate to your SideScan page. Just like with the 2D sonar, you will need to go into the menu and find the "Stop Sonar" option.

  3. Stop Your DownScan: Do the same for your DownScan page. This is a critical, and often overlooked, step.

  4. Check Your Live Sonar: Once all other sonar pages are stopped, navigate back to your live sonar screen. You will now see a clean, clear image with all that distracting pulsating gone.

The "Why" Behind the Fix

Live sonar works by sending out a powerful signal, and any other active transducer in the water can create "cross-talk," which appears as interference on your screen. This effect is more pronounced in deeper water (over 20 feet) but can happen anywhere. By methodically stopping all other sonar signals, you isolate your live sonar unit, allowing it to provide the clearest possible image of what's in front of you.

This quick tip makes a world of difference. It allows you to see fish, structure, and bait with incredible clarity, giving you the confidence to make the perfect cast. Don't let interference get in the way of a great day on the water—take control of your display and get the clearest possible picture.

  • Yes as far as interference goes, I have a H Bird explorer running my Mega Live 2. I have a Hekix unit running my Mega 360. I have a seaclear power harness with a separate 16 volt lithium powering these separate from anything else on boat. Will my 360 running cause interference on my Live? Is it possible to have any trolling motor interference with the separate wiring set up? Thx
