Minn Kota A Series vs. X Series

Compare screen sizes, sonar capability, and networking to choose the right display for your boat. Both families are powered by Humminbird Imaging, with different strengths for different installations.

Which Series Fits Your Setup?

Minn Kota A16 fish finder powered by Humminbird Imaging

A Series

Larger displays and more connections

Our recommendation for anglers who need a 19" screen, two Ethernet connections at the display, or a dedicated second sonar port.

  • A13, A16, and A19: Full HD across the lineup.
  • Dual Ethernet ports for more rigging flexibility.
  • Separate high-power 2D CHIRP sonar port.
Minn Kota X16 touchscreen fish finder and chartplotter

X Series

More sizes for everyday fishing

Our recommendation when you want integrated sonar and boat control without needing A Series' additional physical connections.

  • 7", 9", 10", 12", and 16" models.
  • X16 provides a Full HD option.
  • Ethernet networking supports compatible displays and accessories.

A Series vs. X Series: Key Differences

Sonar capabilities require the appropriate transducer and connections. Advanced sonar accessories are sold separately.
Feature A Series X Series
Size lineup 13", 16", 19" 7", 9", 10", 12", 16"
Resolution 1920 × 1080 on every model Varies by size; X16 is 1920 × 1080
Controls Cross Touch: touchscreen + keypad Cross Touch: touchscreen + keypad
Ethernet ports Two One
Physical sonar ports Two: imaging/2D/360 port + dedicated 2D CHIRP port One sonar port
Dedicated high-power CHIRP Second port supports up to 2,000 watts RMS with appropriate equipment No separate second sonar port
Core sonar Dual Spectrum CHIRP, MEGA Side Imaging+, MEGA Down Imaging+ Dual Spectrum CHIRP and MEGA imaging; capability depends on model and transducer
Live sonar Supported with compatible accessory sonar Supported with compatible accessory sonar
Wireless motor integration Supported with compatible equipment and software Supported with compatible equipment and software
Boat data networking Built-in NMEA 2000 Built-in NMEA 2000
Software connectivity Wi-Fi + Bluetooth Wi-Fi + Bluetooth
Transducer packages MSI+ with transducer or CHO without transducer Transducer-included or CHO without transducer

A Series' second sonar port serves a different purpose from the imaging port. It is not a second general-purpose imaging or live-sonar connection.

Screen Sizes and Resolution

Actual display diagonals, rather than rounded model names.
Model Display diagonal Resolution
A13 13.3" 1920 × 1080
A16 15.6" 1920 × 1080
A19 18.5" 1920 × 1080
X7 7" 1024 × 600
X9 9" 1280 × 720
X10 10.1" 1280 × 800
X12 12.1" 1280 × 800
X16 15.6" 1920 × 1080

What Changes with Sonar?

The manufacturer's published specifications give A Series MSI+ a maximum MEGA Side Imaging range of 500 feet total, side-to-side, and MEGA Down Imaging depth of 250 feet. X9–X16 CMSI+ specifications list 400 feet total, side-to-side, and 200 feet down at MEGA frequencies.

These are rated capabilities with the appropriate transducer, not guaranteed results in every body of water. Water conditions and installation affect usable range. X7 is a separate compact configuration and should be matched to its own sonar package.

For deep-water 2D sonar: A Series adds a dedicated second sonar port for compatible high-power CHIRP equipment. That is a meaningful difference for an installation built around a separate deep-water transducer.

How Do the Extra Connections Help?

A Series: more connections at the display

Two Ethernet ports provide more options when connecting network equipment. Larger systems may still need an Ethernet switch, depending on the number of displays and accessories.

Plan the two sonar ports around their specific roles: imaging and standard sonar on the primary port, with dedicated 2D CHIRP capability on the second.

X Series: build the network you need

A single Ethernet port still supports a networked fishing system. Use the appropriate switch when you need additional wired connections.

Our recommendation: for a display focused on live sonar, choose your preferred screen size and confirm the sonar connection plan before paying for extra ports you may not use.

Before You Order

  1. Choose the sonar package: CHO means Control Head Only, with no transducer included. Match your existing or separately purchased sonar to the exact display.
  2. Plan the mount: compare the full unit dimensions, cable clearance, and mount capacity. A 19" display needs a different space and mounting plan than a compact X Series unit.
  3. Confirm motor integration: both families are listed for wireless integration. Existing 2024-or-newer Advanced GPS Navigation motors need the applicable software updates.
  4. Plan power and networking: account for every display and accessory. Wireless motor control does not replace the fish finder's power, sonar, or Ethernet connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which series is better for a bass boat?

Our recommendation: start with X Series if its screen sizes and connections cover your setup. Choose A Series when you need a 19" display, dual Ethernet ports, or its separate high-power sonar capability.

Is A16 higher resolution than X16?

No. Both have a 15.6" screen and 1920 × 1080 resolution. The physical connections and sonar configuration are more useful differences to compare.

Do I need A Series for live sonar?

No. X Series also supports compatible live sonar. The live-sonar equipment is purchased separately unless included in a specifically listed bundle.

Does dual Ethernet eliminate the need for a switch?

It can provide more direct connection options, but a switch may still be needed. The answer depends on how many displays and accessories are on your network.

Can the two A Series sonar ports connect any two transducers?

No. The ports have different functions. The second is a dedicated 2D CHIRP port; it does not duplicate every capability of the primary imaging port.

Can I mix A Series and X Series in one boat?

A mixed installation can make sense when each display serves a different purpose. Have BFE match the exact units, software, sonar sources, and network hardware before ordering.
